GUNSHOT RESIDUE

When a gun is fired, residue exits the gun behind the bullet. Traces of this residue can land on the hands of the person firing the weapon or on the victim.

Police use tape or a swab to lift residue off the hands of a suspected shooter. Then the forensics technician uses a scanning electron microscope to examine the sample. Because elements in gunpowder have a unique X-ray signature, examination under the electron microscope can help determine whether the substance is actually gunshot residue. Technicians will also use dithiooxamide (DTO)sodium rhodizonate or the Greiss test to detect the presence of chemicals produced when a gun is fired.

Crime Scene Investigation

What is Crime Scene Investigation?

Crime scene investigation jobs have been popularised by several hit crime shows on TV. Hence, many desire to perform these jobs. But the truth is, solving crimes and crime scene investigation as a whole is a very complicated job that requires both theory and practical application.

As the name implies, crime scene investigation requires you to observe, gather evidence, and analyze any information you can get at the crime scene. You will then use those data to hypothesize what took place on the crime scene, what caused the death of a victim, what method of attack is used, and the like. Presence of evidence that would help point to the identity of the suspect must also be gathered. Although this process appears to be quite simple, it is such a complex job that even learned crime scene investigators require years of working experience before they are able to develop skills needed to become better at this job.

There are multiple ways in which you can study, examine, and analyze evidential items that can help boost your crime analysis. However, all of these methods are grounded at a few basic protocol followed when processing a crime.

Scene Processing

This is the initial and most crucial aspect of crime scene investigation. Several methods and skills are involved in this step of your crime scene investigation. Processing the scene of the crime involves the interview process with eyewitness for potential information needed in solving the crime, taking photographic evidence of the crime scene and the victim’s body in relation to the crime scene, more intense evidence search, sketching the crime scene, and a few other photographic evidence that could help solve the crime puzzle.

This is the step that determines the success of your succeeding criminal investigation efforts because it involves the collection and documentation of evidence for future reference. One other factor that makes the scene processing a vital aspect of crime scene investigation is that you cannot re-create a crime scene once you have failed to gather all the information you need for further crime analysis.

Evidence Knowledge and Interpretation of Evidence

What will you do with the evidence if you lack the knowledge to interpret and analyze them? Proper methods of analyzing and handling evidences is crucial in an effective crime scene investigation. Therefore, it is a strong suit that will help keep the crime investigation going. Other evidence need to be further studied at criminal laboratories either to see if there are any fingerprints, or to see samples of blood or other substances. There have been several instances in the past wherein the DNA of the criminal is found on the evidences gathered at the crime scene that led to their arrest.

Criminal Case Processing

The ability to scan crime scenes for evidence, interpreting and analyzing them to find conclusion for a given crime is not a job suited for everyone. It requires specialized skills and knowledge, especially in terms of the technical aspects of the job such as analysis of blood samples, fingerprints, blood patterns, and other tricky part of the investigation.

Once evidence have been examined, you will then put this side by side with any testimony you have gathered from witnesses. The objective is to have a mental recreation of the events during a crime. During the recreation, investigators can factor in some possible angles of motivation for the crime that would help trace the suspect.

Factitious Disorder

criminalprofiler

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) requires that the following 3 criteria be met for the diagnosis of factitious disorder: (1) intentional production or feigning of physical or psychological signs or symptoms, (2) motivation for the behavior is to assume the sick role, and (3) absence of external incentives for the behavior (eg, economic gain, avoiding legal responsibility, improving physical well-being, as in malingering).

The DSM-IV-TR recognizes the following 3 types of factitious disorder: (1) factitious disorder with predominantly psychological signs and symptoms, (2) factitious disorder with predominantly physical signs and symptoms, and (3) factitious disorder with combined psychological and physical signs and symptoms.

A 4th type is Factitious Disorder by Proxy.  Although it is not officially recognized as a distinct disorder in the DSM-IV-TR, the following research criteria are suggested:

  • Factitious disorder by proxy is the intentional production or feigning of physical or psychological signs or symptoms in another person who is under the individual’s care.
  • The motivation for the perpetrator’s behavior is to assume the sick role by proxy.
  • External incentives for the behavior (such as economic gain) are absent.
  • The behavior is not better accounted for by another mental disorder.

They look at you for where you’re at today, but they don’t stop to think about where you’ve just come from. The obstacles you fought to overcome, the pain you had to endure, the sacrifices you had to make just to be here. And the issue is just that - people look, but they don’t see. They don’t stop to consider what kind of story might belong to the person their eyes are so fixated on, yet their mind is so disinterested in getting to know. They’re blinded by their own ignorance. Their lack of experience has them convinced that life is handed to everyone on a shiny silver platter, just as it was for them. They see life only through their lens, disregarding all the areas and walks of life that live beyond what their simple-minded sight encompasses. The truth is, they don’t know your truth and if they show no interest in wanting to - they don’t deserve to. Your story is your truth. Your journey, the way you walk and the pace in which you walk at, is yours. To have and to share with whomever you deem worthy enough to hear it. Don’t ever let the mind of someone too ignorant to understand, make you feel as though you are not someone to be proud of. That your journey, is not one to be honored. That your life, is not one to be celebrated. Perhaps, if more people knew what glowing and growing looked like, they would begin to emulate instead of speculate.

Classifications of Cannibalism

criminalprofiler

Cannibalistic behaviors can be classified according to the relationship of the person(s) being eaten to the person(s) doing the eating. Those classifications, according to White, include

  • endocannibalism, the eating of people within a particular group;
  • exocannibalism, the eating of people outside a particular group;
  • autocannibalism, or the eating of oneself.

These classifications can be further broken down according to motivation:

Survival Cannibal:

  • motivated by starvation: one eats another to survive when normal sources of food are in short supply.
  • There are many instances of starvation cannibalism throughout history; perhaps the most famous example is that of the Donner Party.
  • More recently, according to an ABC News report from October 1997, cannibalism was alleged among starving North Koreans. According to a North Korean military officer who fled the country with his family, starvation was so severe that people were killing and eating their own children, an atrocity so horrible that it was difficult for most people in the Western world to believe.

Ritualistic Cannibalism:

  • members of a particular family or of an entire community are eaten during funeral rites in the belief that the memories of the recently deceased are being honored. Many cannibals in this category also believe that if they eat their dead relatives and community members they will inherit the qualities of the deceased.
  • Tribes in New Guinea and other locations have been shown to believe that the slaying of an enemy, the subsequent eating and excretion of the waste product symbolically represents total contempt and conquest of their adversaries. The latter appeared to be the case for a considerable number of Muslims who had settled on Madura Island, known as the “Island of Charm,” in the Java Sea. There, witnesses reported fighting between the Muslim settlers and the local tribesmen, the Dayaks, over land rights and jobs. As a result, many Muslims have lost their lives when Dayak headhunters, now mostly ostensibly Christian converts, cut off their heads, drank their blood and ate their hearts. Similarly, riots in years past among certain Indonesian ethnic factions in the remote province of West Kalimantan on Borneo Island left thousands dead, many with their heads chopped off and their hearts cut out of the bodies and eaten. Again, what more effective way to show contempt for one’s enemy than killing him, eating his body parts and excreting the digested remains afterward?

Pathological Cannibals:

  • Criminals who murder and eat their victims for the sheer pleasure of it
  • Frequently such crimes are sexually related and motivated, often committed by offenders who have been convicted of previous sex crimes. Such cannibals often have an extensive history of pedophilia and other sex-related offenses, and as such their victims are often innocent, helpless children.
  • Almost as frequently, cannibal murders are committed without the typical motives associated with murder and are committed for the mere satiation of their craving for the taste of human flesh. Contempt similar to that shown by the Dayak cannibals for their victims is often present.
  • One noted such episode was the Montana case of the alleged cannibal and convicted sex offender Nathaniel Bar-Jonah. Nathaniel Bar-Johan, born David Paul Brown, was a repeat sex-offender and pedophile who moved from his native state of Massachusetts to Montana where his alleged activities would ultimately classify him a pathological cannibal.
